Broadway bounce back to reap revenge

THE new season for Broadway members really got into full swing as local and national competitions started.

The first game in the Willersey Provisions Cup was against arch rivals Bredon and, seeking to gain revenge for their defeat in last year's final, Broadway were successful on two of the three home rinks thanks to Joan Parfitt and Steve Aldren.

However, Bredon proved too strong on their own patch and won all three games by 20 shots giving them an 11 shot victory.

Bredon were the visitors for Saturday's Concorde League game when Broadway recorded a 5-0 victory.

Colin Cooper and John Oliver's rinks were in sparkling form as they both recorded emphatic victories against Len Bridle and Bill Hadley by eight and nine shots respectively.

Mark Rainbow was always in front against Pat White and managed to pull ahead in the latter stages to win by six shots while Andrew Walters scored four shots without reply on the last three ends to defeat Richard Woodward 20-15.

Richard Hall went into an 13-shot lead against Moz Pullen which he needed as his opponent pulled back ten shots in the last six ends to only go down by three.

The next morning Broadway entertained Evesham in the EBA Top Club competition encompassing the five traditional games of bowls.

Dave Speake got the hosts off to the ideal start in the two-wood singles beating Mike Webb 17-8.

Cooper made a great start against Pete Bryan and was 9-1 up after six ends and was never headed and pulled away in the last couple of ends to win 21-11.

Dennis and Richard Hall were 8-1 up after seven ends but, four ends later, trailed 12-8 as John Mansell and Brian Quarterman moved up a gear.

The Halls, though, edged ahead by two shots going into the final end when Mansell and Quarterman picked up three shots to pinch the win.

The triples was always a close game with the lead switching several times during the course of the match but Charlie Gore, Dave Bartlett and Mick Aubrey finished the stronger to win by 20-16.

The rinks was never in doubt as Rainbow's team built an 11-shot advantage after 11 ends and ran out 23-11 winners against Colin Grinnell .

Aston Somerville were the visitors on Sunday evening in the National Double Rink clash.

In a closely-fought game the scores were even with Brian Ford's rink holding advantage against Alan Beale while Dave Hill's rink were edging Rainbow's team.

At the 13th end, Aston Somerville held a one-shot advantage but Broadway finished strongly to pick up 17 shots to record a 16-shot success.

l BROADWAY'S ladies won on all four rinks as they defeated Bredon 72-52 in the Concorde League.

The hosts battled hard and all the games were closely contested in the sunshine.

Vale Mixed Triples League

Results: Pershore bt Bredon; Aston Red bt Littleton Gold; Littleton Blue bt Weston; Evesham bt Broadway; Aston Blue drew with Inkberrow.

Standings: Pershore 10pts; Aston Red 8; Littleton Blue 8; Evesham 8; Aston Blue 7; Inkberrow 3; Broadway 2; Weston 2; Littleton Gold 2; Bredon 0.
