Axe falls on local Post Offices

The axe has fallen on two Tewkesbury post offices.

Despite massive protests the Post Office Ltd announced this week that the post office at Mitton is to close, and the one at Twyning will be replaced by a mobile service.

For Rod Critchley of Twyning Post Office it really is the end of the road.

"I haven't been told officially yet, but I believe the closing date is June 6th.

"My first priority now is to get a job, but I have also got to reduce my outgoings, so I have put my cottage up for sale.

"It is a sad day."

Colin and Shirley Dore, who run Mitton Post Office say that they will be able to keep their newsagent's going without the post office, but it means that their assistant John Brixey, who has been with them 23 years, since leaving school will have to go.

Mary Butcher, who led a campaign against the closure said: "I do not know what else we could have done, we are all desperately disappointed.

"It is a sad day for Mitton."

Post Office spokesman Mike Partington said: "These are difficult decisions which we have not taken lightly.

"We believe the plan announced today offers our customers the best prospect for a sustainable network in the future."
