THE ROYAL Hop Pole Hotel is due to open next Monday, May 12 after a £2.5 million refurbishment.

The Church Street building was taken over two years ago in a sad state of disrepair by pub operators JD Wetherspoon.

They have converted the grade two listed building in a new look pub and 29-bedroom hotel.

During the restoration a number of original features were discovered and have been restored and retained.

They include a medieval hall dating back to the 14th century.

When this was discovered with its rare crown post construction, conservation officer Dr Sarah Lewis described it as being of national importance.

It has been restored using ancient timbers and materials found on the site A Tudor section of the building has been restored, and a Georgian room in the main pub area retained.

It will be managed by Stuart and Linda Coxshall.

She said: "Stuart and I are looking forward to welcoming customers into the pub and hotel.

"We believe that people in the town will be impressed with the transformation of the building and that the Royal Hop Pole Hotel will once again be a central feature of Tewkesbury.

"The site is steeped in history and it is a great honour for us to manage it."

Alan Perkis, chairman of Tewkesbury Civic Society said: "It is an excellent restoration and all the signs are that they have done a good job.

"A huge investment like that is bound to have good results and I just hope that behaviour of the customers matches the quality of the restoration."
